These devil/demon/exorcism genre of movies always spark my interest. They are the kinds of movies that can really get under your skin. They freak you out while watching them, and these types of horror movies can be very unnerving. Arguably 'The Exorcist' is the scariest movie ever made. Prior to the release of 'The Last Exorcism', the 'Exorcism of Emily Rose' hit theaters to very poor reviews. Everyone had high hopes for Emily Rose, but it was a terrible movie.
All exorcism movies certainly suffer for being made after the superb classic Exorcist. It's almost like no other exorcism movie, or horror movie for that matter, will ever be able to equal up to the 1973 classic.
Maybe once you've seen the Exorcist, you've pretty much seen it all in the form of what happens in exorcism/devil/demon movies, so for every other movie after the Exorcist it's pretty much "yeah, yeah, yeah been there done that..." You'd think they could come up with new, scary stories involving possessed people and exorcisms because the disturbing concept causes mass scares and chills.
Getting to the movie that the review is based on, The Last Exorcism is a great movie that totally delivers! It was really surprising how enjoyable the movie is. As previously mentioned, usually horror fans go into seeing movies like this genre with high expectations, because they're usually the ones that are the scariest, but these high expectations always seem to quickly fade away when most exorcism horror movies turn out to suck.
The Last Exorcism is a really good movie. Patrick Fabian plays Reverend Cotton Marcus. He offers a different take on the life of a professional exorcist in this day and age. Sometimes greed and lack of faith can lead people down the wrong path. Possessions aren't to be mocked and are serious and very dangerous situations. The Last Exorcism confirms these statements to be facts! Ashley Bell plays a troubled young girl, Nell Sweetzer, who's mother has previously died leaving her to coexist with her stern father and brother.
The film puts Emily Rose to shame and pretty much all other exorcism movies besides the king at the top of the mountain, The Exorcist. This newer horror film has a documentary style feel to it, which adds a bit of first-hand realism. It gives horror fans plenty of creepy scares, and you'll sit on the edge of your seat waiting to see what will happen next! The ending is a terrifying payoff that rounds out the movie perfectly.
While it is almost impossible to top classics like The Exorcist, The Omen, or Kubrick's The Shining, The Last Exorcism has to chart near the top of best horror movies ever made, and is a Killer Rob certified Killer Film! Check it out!
